Valentines Day Makeup Tutorial

Valentines Day is fast approaching, It’s a great time to make some good content tailored to the holiday but I was lucky enough to be apart of a collab consisting of me and 13 other bloggers especially for Valentines Day. I have left all of their links at the bottom of the post so you can check them out!

Today I am going to show you how to get my look, a pink and playful look with a pop of glitter suited for Valentines Day. Remember when doing an eye look, take your time. If any of the steps I do are too advanced or you can’t get the hang of it, don’t worry yourself. You can always do the look without doing certain steps if you so wish to. Before you keep scrolling make sure to follow my Instagram for more makeup looks and tutorials.

Products I used:

IMG_5626 2

Step 1: After doing my brows and priming my entire lid with P Louise Base I dipped into a light peach shade and swept it across my lid in the crease. After that, I went into a deeper pink shade and blended that underneath whilst bringing it onto the outer corner of the lid.

Step 2:  After blending thoroughly so it’s nice and blown out, I went in and cut the crease using some full coverage concealer. if you don’t want to add any shimmer you don’t have to but I wanted to be a little bit extra! Once the shimmer is on there I just took a matte shade what we put in the crease and diffused the harsh line where the shimmer and matte shade joined.

When it comes to shimmer, you can use pink shimmer, purple or just white shimmer!

Step 3: add a liner! For this liner, I used the Shane X Jeffree liquid lipstick in ‘Jeffree what the f**k‘. All JSC liquid lips are eye-safe. I think it looks so beautiful! I also added mascara, I used the Urban Decay Perversion Mascara.

Step 4: Add lashes! Some people can be intimidated by lashes but to me, if you don’t finish off with lashes it’s like if you didn’t ice a cake. Somethings missing. You don’t have to add them though, mine might look quite big but if you want something smaller try the Ardell Wispies.  I did also decide to pull the liner up into the crease to make it more of a graphic liner but this sometimes can be hard to do so don’t worry about doing exactly the same!

I hope that you guys like the makeup look I did and also follow the tutorial. This was such a fun collab to do, everyone has some great content in place for this collaboration! Got some exciting and different things planned for the blog too so I’ll see you all very soon. Take care – Beth x

How to Start a Blog in 2020

Blogging is not as easy as it seems, it takes practice and a lot of patience. I have been blogging for two years now, I started out the blue when I wanted to rant about a foundation I wasted my money on and voila. Themakeupbybeth was born. I am nowhere near a high follower blogger or well known in the community but, I want to use the knowledge I have to help you kickstart a blog and keep growing. Be aware that some of the terminologies that I have used in this post might confuse you a bit, but I’ll make sure I explain it all for you.

Key terms you’ll need to know:

  • SEO – Search Engine Optimisation. This means how your site ranks on search engine results. When we talk about working on SEO it’s to make sure posts will reach those top pages of search engine results.
  • Backlinks –  For example, if I made a post about a friends blog, by putting their link in my post would be classed as a backlink. Listing your blog link on your social media would also be classed as a backlink. Once again, they are essential for traffic and growth.
  • Niche – When we say a niche audience we mean a target audience that is interested in something specific but a subgroup version, so let’s say I am creating a craft magazine, you would usually create content like painting or sewing. But to have a niche would be those specific people that love knitting and want knitting content. Targetting your niche can make your blog more unique and direct more traffic.
  • Monetisation – Earning revenue from the traffic that comes to your site.

How to get started

When you start a blog it can all be done without any money, TOTALLY FREE! If you’re wanting to get more out of the blogging website you use, it may be beneficial to spend some money, for example, if you want a custom domain, you’ll usually have to pay.

Find a topic you like to talk about and get started!

I once used to blog about gaming and the sims 4, but then I fancied a change. I remember wanting to rant about a foundation that was a total waste of money and I have a passion for writing so blogging about makeup was the key thing for me to do. I have expanded on topics I like to write about as time has gone on but that all comes with

Find a website to blog from

I have tried multiple websites and I have found the best to be WordPress, yes, you do have to pay money if you want more benefits but to get started for free WordPress is a great site to start with. If you upgrade your plans on the site, you can also get monetisation for your blog.

Have a plan in place

The key to running a blog is making sure you have a content schedule that won’t burn you out. I used to blog twice a week when I first started and I ended up burning myself out and almost despised having to come to my computer to type a post out. Post every fortnight if it’s easier for you, just try and post once a week to make sure you keep getting traffic to your blog. Sometimes you might have to take a break for personal reasons so don’t worry too much if you have to leave your blog for a bit.

Finding your niche

It can sometimes be tough to find a niche and may take a long time of you blogging to actually be able to work out what’s what. Let’s say out of all your gaming posts, posts about using an Xbox console seems to be the most popular and has the most traffic. You’d then know your niche of people interested in gaming would generally be made up of Xbox users. For me, my niche is people who like drugstore makeup and they also like skincare, but to be even more specific, tips for oily skin.

Creating your blog name

Mine was quite easy, I wanted to incorporate the fact that I also did makeup as well as talk about it hence themakeupbybeth. It started as my Instagram handle and then just became the name for everything I do business-wise.

How to keep growing/tips

Guest Post

Guest posting is pretty clear, it’s when you write a piece for someone else’s blog. By doing this you will reach more people, grow your social following, improve your domain authority and increase backlinks. The way I find people who are willing to let me guest post for them is usually through social media.

SEO Words

We briefly went through what SEO was, even after two years of blogging I sometimes struggle grasping it still. To rank higher in the search engine, it’s key to look at trending keywords to put in your titles or to find a topic to talk about. If I go onto Google trends, I’ll type in beauty and it’ll show me related words that are very popular. The keywords I use will help my audience know what I am talking about and also will drive the people who enjoy that niche to my blog.

It shows me the search frequencies of each keyword, so it would show at this given time that airbrush flawless foundation was one of the top-ranking searches. It helps to show you what’s popular and what’s not.

Don’t overkill hashtags, according to WordPress you should use 15 hashtags or less in your blog posts. If you’re sharing a blog post on Instagram, you can post 30 or fewer hashtags but they found that 11 hashtags generated the most engagement. If you’re using Twitter to share a post, the maximum amount of hashtags to use per tweet is around 3.

It is always helpful to share your posts on your social media so it reaches further. It is helpful to follow blog sharing accounts on Twitter especially. They are accounts with large followings that will share posts for you meaning more traffic and in most cases more social media followers. After posting one of my links yesterday my traffic increased by 55 people. Pinterest is also a HUGE essential to gain more traffic, here’s my new Pinterest below. As you can see you can easily pin your blog URLs directing people straight to your posts.

Comment on peers posts

When you comment on peers posts, not only does it create backlinks but it also directs traffic to your site. When I tweet out a link to my latest blog post in a sharing group, it’s almost like a read for read protocol. ‘If you read and comment on my post, I’ll be nice and return the favour’ is usually the way it goes with commenting. It’s also a great way to make connections in the blogosphere.

Word Count

Sometimes it’s super easy to just crack out 300 words and call it a day, I think we are definitely all guilty of this. I just think maybe I am a little too lazy when it comes to a word count. You need to be aiming at 300-word minimum. The posts that contain 1000 words or more are proven to rank higher in the search engines.

Royalty-Free Photos

To use images in your blog, to avoid any form of legal issues it’s always vital to ask the image owners permission before slapping their photos all over your blog post. For example, when I do makeup posts and I want to show a product that maybe I don’t physically have, I make sure I get in touch with websites to ask permission for photo use. Beauty Bay kindly lets me use their images as long as they are credited but always ask. If you just want images to add more depth to the post-use Pexels, which is a royalty-free photo site.

I wish you all the best of luck with your blogs, remember that progress and growth doesn’t happen overnight.

I really enjoyed doing something different for this post, I hope it was educational and informative for some of you! – Beth x

Dating Resolutions for 2020

In the past, I have spoken about relationships, either when I have been in one or been single. I have been on all sides of the spectrum. Currently, I remain single for multiple reasons, mainly to work on myself before jumping into anything with anyone. But, that doesn’t mean I can’t get to know people and see where it may lead.

As a singleton, you can sometimes feel lonely or pressured to be with someone but it’s all about taking it at your own pace. I was the same and still am, preferably I like to take things slow and never rush.

I have resolutions for my dating life this year. Even though last year I had some horrible experiences in relationships and had my heart broken I was able to learn lessons about how important it is to always look after yourself in a relationship. This year after learning those things I would like to start getting back out there, back on the horse so to say. Dating can be quite hard, but I have teamed up with to hopefully make the journey easier for me and you. For me personally, I prefer free dating sites or apps.

Let’s go through some of my resolutions for dating this year!

Have fun

Make sure I can have safe fun on dates, loosen up a little more and not be afraid to be more humorous in front of potential partners. It can be hard not to seem a little scared of having fun when you feel nervous, as long as it’s safe then let’s all go for it and have a laugh.

Don’t rush

Sometimes I have panicked about not knowing where I stand with someone so then the relationship has been insanely rushed to feel as though we were getting to the point of being ‘together together’. Rushing a relationship can easily head for disaster. So let’s say my lesson has been fully learnt when it comes to the speed of things.

Still enjoy my own life

It’s quite easy in a relationship to become fixated on your partner’s life and hobbies. Now, I want to make sure I can still be engaged in a relationship with someone and at the same time focus on my own life without losing track. It’s essential to always look after your wellbeing and mental health in a relationship as much as it’s important to make sure you are carrying on with your hobbies.

Being open

Being open is key and sometimes it can be tricky. But I aim to be able to be more open in relationships by not feeling like I cannot talk to my future partner about things that may bother me about them, myself or the relationship. Finding someone you feel you can talk to openly and fully is always an indicator that they are a great match for you.

I now know to always have an open mind, not to pressure myself or any situation when I am dating. Hopefully, some of you can relate to my resolutions.

(Disclosure – I was paid to write this post but all opinions are my own)

10 Makeup Products You Need for Beginners

When you start out in makeup, it can be hard to find what you like and what suits you. Unfortunately it’s all trial and error. If you don’t know what you’ll need to begin practising then carry on reading!

Even if you’re oily or don’t appear dry,  moisturiser is essential to prime your face for foundation. It helps products glide on and sit nicely on the skin. Not sure which type of moisturiser you need for your skin concerns? Don’t panic, follow this link to choose the right type.

Foundation is KEY and is most likely the hardest thing to find the best match for. It can create a matte or dewy canvas but it’s all personal preference. I have tried numerous foundations so if you need any opinions or recommendations, just ask. Usually, it’s easier to go get matched, my tip is going to multiple makeup stands and get matched as sometimes they can get the wrong undertone.

Face powder

Face powder is essential. It is to help set the face for the longevity of makeup wear, and also keeps oils at bay. One thing you have to be careful of is what you’re using the powder for, if it’s every day then most powders are fine. If it’s for flash photography you need to get a face powder that doesn’t have flashback. I use the Laura Mercier Powder which is so amazing!

Contrary to popular opinion but, when you apply highlight, you don’t need to look like the tin man. Applying highlight to the high points of your face can help you look more lifted and adds definition. It has now become an essential to have in a makeup bag. Follow this link from L’oreal Paris to see how to apply highlighter and choose the right shade.

You don’t have to use blush or bronzer if you don’t want to. As a beginner, it can be VERY intimidating. Blush helps to give a livelier, more natural touch to a makeup look. It can be worn with or without foundation. The same goes for bronzer/contour, it can be scary to try and sculpt out your face. But if you struggle with where to put it, follow these helpful guides below.

Bronzer guide from Musely.
Blush guide from Buzzfeed.

Brow Pencil

Brows are also a key feature to a look. It’s not essential to walk around with mega Instagram style brows but just to add some definition to them always helps. For me, having an entire kit made it easier to do brows. I have a kit by Benefit Cosmetics which allows me to groom my brows and make them pop too.

Once again an essential. You would have to pick the type of mascara you want, there’s curling, volumising, fluffy, defined, false lashes. I currently use Lash Paradise by L’oreal. Get it here.

Nude Eyeshadow

When you’re living out of your makeup bag for a while or while you’re travelling, having a nude eyeshadow palette is essential as it can be used for all sorts of different look types. My go-to is by Rimmel London, you can buy it from Amazon here.

Lip balm/lip gloss

Multicoloured liquid lip shades aren’t essential but what is is lip balm or gloss. It’s nice just to have something with a slight tint of colour to bring some life to the lips too. I use plumping glosses and Blistex lip balm.

Maybe it seems a bit obvious to mention sponges and tools but we can forget to include them sometimes. Sponges for foundation shouldn’t cost a fortune and neither should brushes, but they are vital for foundation application.

Something different today, hope you enjoyed it though or found it helpful. Also thank you for the kind birthday wishes last week, take care – Beth x

Lunar Beauty Strawberry Palette, Should You Buy?

IT’S MY BIRTHDAY! on the day of posting it is my birthday so I’ll leave you all with this post. Enjoy!

I received this palette for Christmas from my sister, I had commented on how pretty it was the last time I was in the Morphe store and to my surprise I opened it on Christmas day. Although I personally didn’t like the brand owner at the time due to ‘dramageddon’, I was instantly drawn to the product.

The shade selection is truly gorgeous, out of all the palettes I have seen (trust me, I have seen a lot) this colour story is quite unique in comparison to all the other palettes on the market. There’s shimmers, mattes and even beautiful pressed glitters for you to dip your brush into.

In regards to packaging, some people take it or leave it. The packaging on this is absolutely stunning and it has a 3D mood on the cover. I did worry at first that the 3d element was going to cause problems when slotting my palette into the tub I use for palette storage, it’s fine though.  The mirror inside is rather large too which is fantastic as you don’t have to squint to see what you’re doing. Heres the craziest part, when I was using it I wondered what I could smell. It was something really sweet, turns out, Manny actually made the shadows with a strawberry scent! How cool is that? That’s definitely another selling point. But, let’s quit rambling and see how this palette performs.

Matte shades

LBSD Matte Swatches

Shimmer shades

LBSD Shimmer Swatches

These shadows just blend so beautifully, I didn’t have to struggle. The pigment is also gorgeous, not much fall out in the pan either. I did use a base for the shadows like I always do, that is the P Louise Base in shade Rumour.

I 100% recommend that you buy this palette, you will not be let down. It has something for extra glam days or just the plain jane days. Get the palette here if you’re from the UK. Or if you’re from the US, get the palette from the Lunar Beauty site here.

Today is my birthday so I’ll see you next Friday for another post! If you want to, feel free to follow me on Instagram and see the looks I created with this palette. The link is below. Until next time, take care – Beth x

What I Got for Christmas 2019

Before we start the post I just wanted to say that with this post I am not showing off or trying to come off as spoilt. I just thought it would make a nice post showing the gifts I received, p.s there’s lots of makeup! Let me know what you got for Christmas in the comments below.

Of course, my family know I am obsessed with makeup, they know it’s my passion and what I love to do as my fulltime hobby. They’ve helped me add to my kit by giving me some palettes I desperately wanted, lippies and eyeliners that were all on my wish list this year. I got 4 palettes, Jeffree star jawbreaker, Blue Blood and Controversy Palette. And the Lunar Beauty Strawberry Palette which I want to post a review of. All these palettes are stunning! I also got a top-up of my go-to brow products. I would recommend Jeffree’s eyeshadows, that’s why I asked for them! I have reviewed some of his stuff in the past so feel free to view it here.

Bath & body

My friends and family know I don’t use Lush anymore so they bought me some bath products from Bomb Cosmetics and they’re the cutest! I have organised all my bath products into a cute basket so I can just grab and go when ready.

I got a couple of candles from my mum, Yankee candle of course. She also got me some pj’s, stationery and makeup bits as well. One of the things I love is a Harry Potter Dobby diary she got me! She’s trying to help me get organised which I fully appreciate. I got some gifts which I can’t use due to skin sensitivity but I will be donating those to homeless/women’s shelters. I advise you guys to do the same, instead of throwing the gifts away or letting them sit on a shelf give them to those neediest.

Where can you get these products? For the UK you can visit or for the Jeffree palettes if you are US-based then you can go directly to For the Benefit brow set, you can pick that up from John Lewis.

I am beyond blessed to have received what I did, I am grateful, so grateful. What did you guys get for Christmas? Let me know below. Take care – Beth x

2020 Goals

Goals for the new year

2020 already, it’s absolute madness. 2019 went by so quickly it was actually scary. But, here’s to the new year and here are my goals!

Fully invest in my blog

Not necessarily monetary wise, more of time-wise. This year I have been quite lax or poor mental health has made it that I can’t be bothered to blog anymore. Seeing the views and how much they’ve gone down is somewhat of a wake-up call that I need to keep posting/being creative with content so people don’t get bored. I hope to increase the visits and hopefully get around 1.5-3k for 2020. I have so many ideas planned and am wanting to get into a proper posting routine. I now have a MacBook too so I can write my blog at any time, any place.

Get invested back into makeup

Once again, this year I lost touch with makeup, down to mental health and other reasons. Other reasons being sometimes I became frustrated with the makeup community, working my butt off and not getting recognised. Also having looks stolen added to the frustration. It hurt and I kind of gave up, I had the mindset where I wasn’t creating for me anymore, I was creating for the approval of everyone else. I have obviously been given a lot of makeup gifts this Christmas so I have no excuse not to be experimenting with colours and new looks.

Screenshot 2019-12-29 at 14.06.18.png

Increase fitness

I’ll say increase fitness instead of weight loss because the words ‘weight loss’ have a negative stigma around them. I am wanting to get fit and get back into looking after my body, not just my mental health. I find that when I am looking after my body it helps my mind out too.

Get organised

My organisation skills are awful! I don’t just mean organising things I need to do, I mean my living space too like my wardrobe, bedroom, social schedule. Get organised and stay organised. My mum was kind enough to get me a Harry Potter diary for Christmas so now I have no excuse to be all over the place.

Volunteer more of my time to those who need it

More and more I become aware of those bang on my doorstep who are struggling, struggling with abuse, drug abuse, poverty, homelessness and starvation. I want to give my time to helping people in need alongside everything else I want to achieve with my life. I would like to work with animals at some point, so help out at an RSPCA shelter or something of that nature. In January I’ll be donating some unwanted Christmas presents to women’s shelter in my local area. It’s nice to be nice and I encourage you to do the same.

Growing my followers

I know followers aren’t everything, but from a brands point of view they take into account your followers and that is one of the main factors when they decide if they want to work with you or not. I’d like to reach about 2-3k on Twitter and 1-2k on Instagram. Feel free to help me out by following my links below.

Get recognised by brands

This year I was recognised by some brands but the interaction was very limited. 2020 I’d love for a brand to repost me, share my looks, post me on their profile/story. I’d just love to get some recognition from brands that I love.

And here to hoping 2020 is better than what 2019 was! What are your resolutions, let me know in the comments below.

Have a safe and happy new year guys. All my love, see you in 2020 – Beth x

2019 Recap and Achievements

Recap for 2019

2019 has easily been one of the worst years I have ever endured. It has been full of pain, sadness and loss. I don’t want to portray this perfect life that isn’t true. Of course, every human has their ups and downs but that’s all part of the course that’s life.

Losing my best friend

In April I sadly lost my best friend to suicide. It was all so sudden and I was completely shocked. I was never fully able to come to terms with the fact he had felt so low he did what he did. Not a day goes by when I don’t miss him, his smile, his energy, everything. It taught me how important it was to talk about mental health instead of keeping it bottled up. If any of you are reading and feel this way too, stop and call 116 123 (UK). It’s a helpline by The Samaritans to talk about how you currently feel.

Toxic Relationships

I won’t touch too much on this one because I don’t really want to talk about it but, I ended a few toxic relationships and friendships this year too. Let’s just say even though it hurt me at the time, I came back out of them a stronger person.

Mental Health

My mental health kindly started to deteriorate around September, luckily after going back onto my medication, I feel a lot less helpless. It’s a slow process but I’ve got through it so many times I know I’ll be ok.

Due to a lot of issues in my personal life, I somewhat abandoned makeup and felt a little bit like I didn’t belong in the community. I found it really hard to be creative and express my art when people were being recognised and I wasn’t. Of course, I’m happy for those that were chosen it just sometimes feels like I am not enough. The one thing I have learnt is to stop comparing myself to others and do my own thing.

I know I have been kind of negative so far in my recap but, there are some positive changes that I made this year. I started to look after my psychical fitness more this year, I made working out a priority.

I have truly found some good friends this year, online and in my personal life. One of the people I’ve grown closest to is my friend Nicole . Even though she battles chronic illness she’s always there for me when I have been at my lowest. The second best friend I have made is Andy, this guy is truly kind and amazing. Thank you for being so amazing!

2019 may have been predominately awful but its been full of lessons. The pain I’ve gone through has taught me so much about myself, others and what to do in the future. Tomorrow I’ll be posting my 2020 goals so stay tuned!

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas mine was somewhat ok, I had to work all of Christmas so I only managed to spend a little bit of time with family. I am looking forward to all the content I have planned for 2010. Take care –  Beth x

MISSING: Find Poppy Jukes

A 4 year old terrier vanished on the from a small village in Nottingham called Keyworth on the 15th of December 2019. At first it was believed she went missing but as time has gone on we are to think that she has been stolen.

There is a reward for anybody who finds her. She is mostly black with a white snout and grey wisps all over, white toes a white-tipped tail. IF you know anything, anything at all please call Jo-Anne Jukes (poppy’s owner) on 07949086779. If you think you have sighted this dog, please inform someone about the location. Also if you happen to find her, take her to somewhere safe and inform someone ASAP.

People are advised to shout her around the village she disappeared from to see if she has gone and hidden anywhere, check outhouses, sheds and other small hiding spots. Poppy has a phone number and address on her green collar which has a silver metal bone ID disc. Please just help BRING HOME POPPY! I have spoken to her owner and of course her and the family are distraught, do what you can, share or donate to the just giving page, every little thing you do counts.

If you see anything and can’t get in touch with the owner for any instance then please report it to any of these numbers that surround the Nottinghamshire area.

I know this post is a little different to my usual. I just really want this little angel to be reunited with her family. I couldn’t imagine the pain the family are currently going through. All you have to do is share and retweet, it is done in seconds and is free! Posts will be back to normal before new year. Take care guys – Beth x

How to Care for Your Mental Health This Christmas

Christmas time is full of emotion, excitement and joy especially. But for some of us, it can be a time where the season is full of depression and anxiety. I wanted to talk to you guys about ways you can care for your mental health when it’s hard at Christmas time. So grab yourself a cuppa (decaf for me) and let’s talk.

Talk to someone

Talk to friends or family. Anyone who will listen, talk to them. They don’t always have to be a mental health professional, sometimes it can just help to get your feelings out there. If you’re UK based (which most of my readers are) feel free to call The Samaritans on 116 123, they are a charity that talks to anyone who is in need of some support. You don’t have to be suicidal for this either. If you would rather be face to face with someone, The Samaritans do have drop-in branches which I will link in case you want to pop in instead.

Pamper yourself

Treat yourself to a cake you’ve been craving or that new DVD you wanted! Run a nice, hot bath and relax. Do a skincare routine, put on a face mask, do your brows. Feel good about yourself and take pleasure in caring for yourself.

Help others

Volunteer at an animal shelter or feed the homeless. Being social and interacting with others can sometimes ease your thought and make you feel good/positive about life. It’s nice to be nice.

Don’t go into debt worrying about Christmas

Money is a huge factor that increases anxiety and depression, don’t go into debt trying to please people. If you do have to buy gifts, maybe try to handcraft them as that could also serve as a distraction and hobby. This year I became anxious about what I had bought for family, so I ended up making loads of gifts through painting and other crafts I am good at.

One thing that has helped me this season is by having some organization. Putting everything in my phone calendar helped me see every meeting or social gathering I had to attend so I knew where I was.

Remember to breathe

I don’t mean just inhale and exhale, I also mean to stop and chill. Busy day shopping and wrapping presents? Go home, put a film on and relax. We can easily feel overwhelmed and making sure you take time to stop is essential to not going over the edge. One thing I also like to do when I feel a little ‘burnt out’ is either play The Sims or sit in my pyjamas all day and binge Youtube.
